Yesterday, I had the unique opportunity to join him and his family on a journey from Nashik to Niphad, where we explored vineyards, tasted wines, and even participated in grape harvesting. It was an unforgettable experience that I’m excited to share with you!

The Journey Begins:
Chirag had a vision: he wanted to source Cabernet Sauvignon wine grapes to create his very own wine at home. Being an architect with a keen interest in winemaking, he knew this journey would be more than just a simple trip to purchase grapes—it would be an immersive experience into the world of wine-making.
The adventure began when Chirag drove to Nashik with his parents and a close friend from the IT field. As a part of the plan, he asked me to book a stay for them, and I was happy to help by securing two rooms at Hotel Kyriad Nashik.
After meeting up with them in the evening, we decided to unwind at Hotel Yaa Hoo for a wine and dine experience with a bottle of Sula Cabernet Shiraz, trying to pair it with our local Maharashtrian food.

A Visit to Grape Berry Vineyards
The next morning, we set out to find the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. But on our way, we couldn’t resist making a stop at Grape Berry Vineyards, a charming location known for its unique varieties of wine grapes. Here, we took a quick tour of the vineyards and had the pleasure of witnessing a transformation in progress—the Spanish variety Grenache turning from green to black, and Tempranillo grapes ripening and ready for harvest in the coming days.
We were then given a fascinating insight into the wine-making process by Mr. Deepak, the son of Mr. Sanjay Kahandal, the owner of the vineyard. We were treated to a tasting of four different wines: Chenin Blanc, Cloudy Shiraz, Regular Shiraz, and an unusual but delightful red wine blended with honey. Everyone in the group, including Chirag’s father, Mr. Sudhir Mody (a renowned YouTube singer known for his rendition of songs by Rafi), enjoyed the wines. The dryness and mouthfeel, full of tannins, were particularly memorable.

🎶 It was also quite amusing when Mr. Sudhir Mody serenaded us with his rendition of Oh My Love during our wine-tasting session. A true example of how music and wine can go hand in hand!

The Harvest: A Hands-On Experience
After soaking in the beauty of the vineyards, we continued our journey to the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, approximately 70 km from Nashik city. Upon arrival, we were all eager to roll up our sleeves and get involved in the grape harvesting process.
It was a truly special moment, as we all participated in the harvest, from Chirag’s family to my wife and her sister. The experience of picking grapes with our own hands was magical and something I’ll never forget.

The Road Back & The Awaited Wait
With the crates full of fresh grapes (approx. 125 kg), Chirag headed back to Surat, carrying not just the fruit but memories of an unforgettable journey. Now, as Mr. Chirag waits eagerly for the wine-making process to unfold, he can’t help but wonder how this special batch of wine will turn out.
It will take about six months for the wine to be ready, but I know that when Chirag invites us for a tasting, it will be an event worth celebrating. Until then, we can only imagine how the flavors and aromas will evolve.
